Netflix intentionally delay in accepting the movie requests at the website level. On top of that, they have non-functioning distribution centers where workers are paid next to nothing, and therefore, do not care about orders. The workers must be stealing the ordered CDs quite often. This really explains the reactions of customer reps. They look at the system and insist that they mailed the movies. What they don't have is a system to track what is really going on at the distribution centers. The workers can simply put through the barcodes on the envelops but not send out the envelops to the post office. Netflix knows this but they simply refuse to spend money to improve the system. Do you think that FedEx workers can get away with stealing the packages? I would say that most of lost CDs are due to Netflix's mishandling but not the fault of postal service. How do you explain that I only have Netflix mail problems but never with other mails? I wouldn't be surprised if the supervisors at the distribution centers are in it for the scheme too. I have never received a new CD or even fairly new CD. 99% of CDs I received has been badly scratched where I have to fast-forward to skip the damaged parts. I suspect that the fresher copies of CDs get stolen quickly. It’s a great side business to run when you think about it.

I am currently at 2389, doing the singles games, key is to do the fast serve they can't return to get addon points. While it's addictive, it isn't that hard to get to this level. The game could use some improvement in racket control and other features. Also helps to have at least 5 brewskies before you play.

Actually I believe that most of these hints are real minor when trying to tune a website. It's good to try to keep things fast as you write them, but if you have an existing system it's probably much cheaper to buy a second server to take the load instead of trying to replace all preg_replaces with str_replaces all over the code and win, let's be generous, 1% over all performance...

These 'rules' might make a difference if you heavily rely on a single command, for example run preg_replace over 10.000 strings every time a user calls a special page. But if you have a single preg_replace on a page, who cares?

Same applies to almost all of these rules, with exception to 3, 4 (file system related) and 12 (plain stupid ;) ). And also 7, but that's because you'll never want publically visible error messages on your production system.

Hello Jonathan

I am using serial port communication since long time.
But never face such problems
Actually we have one unit connected to the serial port and we pass on the values to it The Unit gets values configurs it and replies back.
This is done with lot of times with different units.
But the problem comes this time
When we are sending some data to unit of some 100 characters in length.
then the unit doesn't respond in well some characters are missing out in between.
I am really not knowing wht happens since when we are using it with the hyperterminal then every thing works fine. All data gets configured well
I have tried with the monk and was able to see the data coming on serial port is right But what happens when it goes to the unit.
please guide me I am now trying the one you gave here
lets see
please reply back on my mail
:)
thanks

This is the first time I've ever seen Smarty suggested as a way to speed a site up. Template engines may have their place, but they rarely bring any speed benefits. Even with all of the compile checks off, Smarty is pretty slow (unless it has been dramatically changed in the last year or so).

If you're wanting to cache content, use a proper caching lib.

<i>Use Ram Disks for any data that’s disposable</i>

Can't believe anyone is STILL advocating this.

Edge servers are automatically behaving like Ram disk - only much, MUCH better; it uses the memory dynamically and in a way that's much manageable by the OS. Unlike Ram disk who's taking away the memory from the OS.

And edge servers WILL fallback to disk cache gracefully - therefore still giving excellent performance boost (because the request still doesn't hit the system). Unlike a Ram disk.

The top mistake should be : neglecting to use edge servers.

Edge server - also known as reverse-proxy server, provides the MOST significant scalability & performance boost, by avoiding most requests to even hit the system.

Most of the requests won't even hit the webserver. Many will be served straight from memory. Some more from the disk cache (read: static files, further cached by the operating system)

In a case, a system was serving 2 requests per second at maximum, with 100% processor load. After deploying an edge server, it handles 500 requests per second, with 30% processor load.

The performance gain alone is simply mind-boggling. And it is scalable to the max - you can deploy multiple edge server, spreading the load between them.

This is the top mistake, most definitely. Even so-called "experts" misses this : You START from the edge. From then you continue to the center of the architecture.

<code>$row[id]</code> is a syntax error - too bad PHP isn't treating it as one, but tries to think for the programmer.

I'm not sure, but are Americans so stupid to understand by their own that higher speed equals lower mileage? Does it require federal government or congress to point out this simple truth?

If there is a speed limit of 70 mph set by local government, that means it should be safe do drive 70 mph in this area. And it should be up to me if I'd like to save few $ driving 55 mpg or not.

Is it strange that all of these rules mine a good design?
Remember the saying 'premature optimization is the root of all evil'...
I can use ten str_replace() instead of a regex, but is that code maintanable?
I can make function static, but if I do how can I test them?
I can avoid autoload() or spl_autoload stack, but it will mean add thousand of lines of require()..
