Andy Pennell from Microsoft responds to the question of where Microsoft BMP format is defined and points to the Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats, which seems to be an excellent resource on everything graphics-related. Even if you’re not re-inventing the next GIF format, there’s a useful chapter on the basics of data compression as well as multimedia formats.

Blue Security will supposedly rock your world by parsing your spam, following the links onto it, finding the contact forms on the Web site that actually sells the stuff and asking the owner nicely to please stop spamming. After analyzing user’s spam report, they will send a message to the spammer each time another Blue Frog user reports receiving e-mail from the outfit.

So after signing up I was given an address to forward my spam to - prostoalex@reports.bluesecurity.com - and there’s a client to download. The purpose of the client, as far as I get it, is to complain every 10 minutes about being logged out, so you have to bring up the log-in window and re-type the username and password. But overall, interesting approach.

When Jerome K. Jerome in 1889 described going to the British Museum to read medical encyclopedia and subsequently finding symptoms of almost all diseases in his body, he didn’t realize the problem would exacerbate more than a century later. Web hypochondriacs are calling up doctors with requests for prescriptions for all sorts of diseases, since they discovered some similar symptoms on the Web. Wall Street Journal quotes a doctor: “My impression is that people believe more of what they read than what I tell them. It seems that traditional Western medicine based on scientific evidence is less and less trusted by the general public. Meanwhile, some dubious theory from the Internet will be swallowed hook, line and sinker nine times out of 10.”

The inventor of Ethernet Bob Metcalfe is interviewed by AlwaysOn on current issues. Metcalfe is known for challenging commonly accepted wisdom and this time he’s quite confrontational.

On open source and operating systems:

If you look at Windows and Linux, both are based on 25-year-old technology. Windows is sort of a GUI version of the Mac’s operating system, and Linux is of course Unix, which stems from 1968. These are both old clunkers. So the question is, Where are the new operating systems likely to come from?

On IPv6 adoption and IETF:

Back when you attended the IETF, you all looked down your noses at the ITU (or I guess it was called CCITT at the time)—the entrenched, corporately manipulated, corrupt, competent standards being embodied in IT. We were the IETF—the swashbuckling, institution-oriented, open people, the rebels. That’s changed now. The Internet has arrived, and all of those people are now just like ITU: IETF has become the ITU.
