Blog archives for February, 2006

Free DDJ subscription

Free Dr. Dobb’s Journal subscription if you qualify. It’s a very useful magazine that I used to make myself read every month, since you’d learn something new inevitably, regardless of what the topic of the month was. Print subscribers also get access to online archives, which is a nice benefit by itself.

EdgeIO launched

edgeio.gifEdgeIO, an aggregator of online classifieds and any blog postings you tag with the word listing, is now open to public. The geographical slider is very neat, and allows you to discover more listings, as you move it to cover larger area. The company was originally presented on February searchsig at Google. The job search looks like it is powered by KarmaOne, and there’s no Craigslist data in the system, and there’s a question of whether it will ever be. Keith Teare announced the launch on his blog, with Om Malik writing a post on it right after launch, raising some obvious concerns such as spamming.

Non-leaking mugs are here

Next time a ceramic mug falls on the ground, you won’t have to buy a new coffee:

A team of undergraduates at the university in Socorro designed a ceramic mug that can fall 15 feet onto concrete pavement and still hold a full cup of java afterward without leaking.

Upcoming IPO’s

Useful links for IPO watchers: upcoming initial public offering on Hoover’s and Yahoo! Finance.

Beware of that 1099

If you read through daily mail carefully, you probably found out that you (could be named) a winner in the great sweepstakes, or the vacation of the lifetime can be yours, if you just call right away. According to Washington Post article, there’s a new scam circulating around:

Marketing pitches masquerading as the 1099 forms detailing non-payroll income have been arriving in taxpayer mailboxes, while e-mails that appear to be from the Internal Revenue Service are really identity theft scams designed to collect personal financial information.

NSA shopping for data mining startups

National Security Agency paid a visit to Silicon Valley venture capitalists, New York Times learned, to talk about potentially “interesting” technologies that the Feds would be interested in purchasing. Data mining technologies that could link arbitrary facts into logical events and find dependencies, technologies for quick voice transcription - all these technologies usually get to market faster if developed by private companies.

MySQL users worried after recent Oracle purchases

Oracle’s purchase of Berkeley DB and Innobase, the MySQL community (not the company) is getting worried about the future, PC Magazine says. From the article: “The fear is based on the vision of Oracle forcing its tiny competitor out of business, thus leaving the MySQL user community in the lurch, forced to fork the source code.”

Linking ING Direct and HSBC Direct

How do i link ing and hsbc and visa versa? Hsbc doesn’t recognize ING and INg requires a check?

asks CJ

As you might have noticed, trying to enter ING Direct routing number and account number into HSBC bank-to-bank transfer form yields “Not found” in the result. Unfortunately, the official answer from HSBC Direct is as follows:

ING Direct has chosen not to partner with HSBC for the bank to bank transfer service.

Neither can you link an HSBC Direct account to an ING account, as the latter requires a check?

Solution? Link your EmigrantDirect account to both ING and HSBC.
