Graphic file format reference

Andy Pennell from Microsoft responds to the question of where Microsoft BMP format is defined and points to the Encyclopedia of Graphics File Formats, which seems to be an excellent resource on everything graphics-related. Even if you’re not re-inventing the next GIF format, there’s a useful chapter on the basics of data compression as well as multimedia formats.
