Searchsig - February 2006
February searchsig was hosted by Google this time. Google Base, Oodle and EdgeIO presented with CraigsList being omnipresent in the room, since the topic for discussion was search and classifieds.
EdgeIO demoed as well for the first time, with the company launching at the beginning of March. Any time you sell something on your blog and tag it with listing, EdgeIO will come around and pick it up. Claim your blog and leave your zip code at EdgeIO Web site - and suddenly people can do all sorts of geographical searches, like used Honda tires round Palo Alto, CA, and expand their searches as needed. Pretty cool concept, would be interesting to see how well it will take off. Wouldn’t take that much for someone like Technorati to replicate the functionality. Business Week also has a review of EdgeIO presentation, and you’ll never see a TechCrunch profile of the company since Mike Arrington is one of the co-founders (the other one is Keith Teare of RealNames fame).
ChatAny presented in the time slot alotted to startup companies. It’s a real time expert communication system that had some cool tools, like instant messenger integrated into a Firefox toolbar. Nothing that really gets your attention, but an interesting concept.
The topic of money was floating in the room. Also, Google Base announced they will remove the Disallow for every user-agent from their robots.txt. So someone like SimplyHired or Oodle could come around and index Google Base concept. I asked the product manager whether listings would show up higher on Google Search index, being on a *.google.com domain with a sweet PageRank of 10. Her response was that they wouldn’t tweak the Google Search results to promote Google Base. However, she did not reply to the question whether or not she’d expect Google Base pages to take up top spots for many Google searches due to a natural organic selection process, since the project apparently relies on monetization of pageviews, and is there a better way to increase your pageviews than ranking at the top of a prime search engine?
