Vizio 42″ LCD HDTV picture optimization
In a report on LCD vs plasma wars the New York Times stumbles into CNET reviewers checking out the Vizio 42″ LCD HDTV:
At CNET’s test center in Manhattan, Mr. Miller and Mr. Katzmaier were reviewing the 42-inch Vizio L42 HDTV L.C.D. ($1,600). To optimize picture quality, they reduced the backlight intensity to 10 on a scale of 1 to 100. (The default is 90.)
I tried setting the backlight to 10 on the DVD I was watching through the HDMI connection, and got a pretty bleak and darkened picture, so CNET experience did not quite work for me. Turning the backlight to maximum value of 100 produced a pretty good effect and brightened the LCD picture.

They put it to 10 to calebrate the picture. With such a low setting you can then try to get the picture as clear as possible, showing the most detail. Once it’s to your liking, turn the brightness back up!

Do you know what the standard settings are for the VIZIO L42?
